Write for Beer, Says Gerald’s Talking Dog

Story/essay-writing contest at Stormcloud.

FRANKFORT, MI (December 3, 2014) – Stormcloud Brewing Company is hosting a story/essay-writing contest to celebrate the official release of their Cherry Rye Dubbel entitled, “Gerald’s Talking Dog.”

Every beer at Stormcloud has a story. Sometimes Brewmaster Brian Confer will share it, while others are kept secret. Because every dog has its day, Stormcloud is accepting writing submissions to tell the untold tale of “Gerald’s Talking Dog.”

Framework: Each essay submission should be a creative undertaking, meant to whelm, overly, and entertain, beginning with the following:

  • Title: Gerald’s Talking Dog
  • First line: “Gerald’s Talking Dog loves cherries. That’s all he talks about…”

The rest is up to the writer, to spin the tail in 500 words or less.

Submissions: All essays are due by noon on Thursday, December 11, 2014. Email submissions to charla@stormcloudbrewing.com or print it and drop off at the pub. One legibly-typed submission per person. Each entry must include the entrant’s name, email address, telephone number, and age. There is no fee to enter. Winners will be announced Saturday, December 13.

Top Dogs: Three lucky dogs will have their stories chosen to be presented to the Stormcloud Nation during a formal reading in the pub on Saturday, December 13 at 7:30 pm. Live music from Elberta-based trio Alfredo will follow.

Prizes: 1st place: $25, t-shirt and growler fill. 2nd place: $15 and growler; 3rd place: growler.

The contest’s Judge Panel includes Jeff Smith, Editor of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s magazine and MyNorth.com; Bob Butz, award-winning book author and essayist and a regular commentator on eco-political topics for Interlochen Public Radio; Jordan Bates, co-owner and editor of The Betsie Current; StormClouders.

Stormcloud Brewing Company opened in June 2013 just two blocks from Lake Michigan in the lakeside town of Frankfort, Michigan. A small brewery specializing in Belgian-style brewing, Stormcloud offers approximately 20 beers on tap in addition to a full menu of flatbread pizzas, small plate appetizers, soups/salads, charcuterie plates, and specialty popcorn.
